LORENZO GABRIELE
Historical Flutes
FACTS ABOUT LIFE & MUSIC
Lorenzo Gabriele was born in Rome with a strong passion for all kinds of musical expression. He begun very early playing and self-learning initially the recorder and then taking the first flute lessons. He also spent and still spends a lot of time playing other instruments and listening to different styles of music, which gave him the opportunity to develop an open, sensitive mindset and an ancestral feeling for rhythm, harmony and melody. Funk, Soul, Jazz, Latin, Folk and Rock are his favourite musical genres.
Once he achieved the Bachelor degree, after a thorough academic and professional development as a modern flute player, he started working for different groups, orchestras and theaters in Italy, ranging from classical to jazz, from folk to stage music.
At the same time he revealed a deep elective affinity with the so called "performance practice" or HIP and after completing his modern studies he decided to fully devote himself to learning period flutes (mostly from the baroque, classical and early romantic eras) and to different researches aiming to bring forgotten works by neglected composers back into the limelight,
thus trying to break into the most authentic spirit of each age and style.
Lorenzo studied baroque, classical and romantic flute in Frankfurt am Main at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst (HfMDK), under the guidance of Prof. Karl Kaiser, but also participated in several masterclasses held by some of the greatest early music players.
He won the first prize at the 8th International Telemann-Competition in 2015 and many other awards with different ensembles at numerous international chamber music competitions. He also collaborates with many ensembles and orchestras playing concerts and recording music. He is founder and director of La Tabatière "un petit orchestre historique".
He loves chess and playing cards and believes that - in music as well as in life - Tempo does not exist.
This is not the reason why he is always late though.

PROJECTS
The music remains unchanged; only it is performed in a more colourful and multifaceted way through the use of additional, different instruments. Following the most important model of Jean-Philippe Rameau's Pièces de Clavecin en Concerts, where pieces for harpsichord alone are "accompanied" - as well as simultaneously explored in their chromatic palettes - by violin, flute and viola da gamba, the Ensemble Amüsant attempts to arrange other works by different baroque composers in the same way and to let them bloom
into an orchestral, full-sounding experience.
Following this common practice, the Sonata in A major by J. S. Bach (for flute and harpsichord obligato) then becomes a "concertante" trio sonata. Other suites and concerti by Telemann and Couperin, for which the composers themselves had foreseen freedom of instrumentation, will be interpreted "variably" in order to highlight many different sides of the same composition.
Die Zauberflöte, eine Oper im Taschenformat | The Magic Flute, a pocket-sized Opera
with La Tabatière & Friends
Our production of Mozart's Magic Flute brings the entire work to the stage, however in an arrangement by the publisher Nikolaus Simrock from 1795 - only 4 years after the premiere of the Singspiel - for trio with flute, violin and violoncello,
which contains almost all the numbers of the piece.
A narrator - embodied by Carola Moritz - leads through the action, while live digital drawings - by Julius Klemm - bring the stage
set with all the opera's protagonists to life in front of the audience.
